Skinny Love by Bon Iver

This is a film I created as a music video for the fantastic Skinny Love by Bon Iver. Seeing as they still don’t have an official video for this awesome song (which was released in 2009). It was shot in one day and edited in another. The location is Fairhead, the most north eastern part of Ireland. It was a particularly nice day and I wanted to make a “feel good” summer edit. So I took my Canon 550D out with no tripod as I wanted the film to have a distinctively handheld...

Northern Exposure

On Saturday the 5th of June Fairhead was tackled by a number of experienced climbers from all over Ireland. Myself and Con took a walk up to check out the scene and take some photo’s. Some of the routes were incredible, and a long way off my ability. The day clouded over but thankfully the rain stayed away. A small shame as Friday was amazing weather. Hopefully one day I’ll be able to get one of these routes under my belt. Big respect to all the climbers there who did some...

Celtic Coast

This is just a short edit I did to test some grading and effects that aim to give a modern take on the Super 8 film look. It’s overkill with the light leaks and artifacts but that’s why it’s called a test. It was graded using Magic Bullet Looks from Red Giant, and the artifacts were created using Magic Bullet Misfire. I decided not to use the drop frame effect that lends an animation type look to the footage as I wanted to try a modern version with some slow speed shots. I...

The End Party

What an incredible season to round off the life of the beloved Complex. Platzl, Pomodoro and of course the Funky Chicken were host to some of the best times through many years and for many people. Needless to say that when it’s time came to an end the closing party would be a monumental event. It was. And, although I was strongly under the influence of alcohol, I managed to take a few shots. Actually, I took a lot more than I could remember, and so I decided to put together a little...

Arlberg Calling 2.0

Since returning home I’ve had a bit of spare time on my hands and so I decided to re-edit our Arlberg Calling film. Tim did a great job on the first one, and as a result we were rewarded with third in the Powder to the People film competition and some nice prizes. However, due to my early departure we didn’t get as much footage as we would have liked, and therefore I decided (seeing as this edit would not be required to use footage shot during the competition) to add some of our...

From Austria to Ireland

The season came to an end quicker than I could have imagined, and everyone said their goodbye’s. It was a stranger experience than the previous year. The knowledge that the place where we, and so many others before us had lived, was to be demolished to make way for yet another hotel, brought an underlying sense of sadness to the parting. Nobody could deny that despite all the nights of hard work, the place had become part of our experience at a personal level. The old wooden structure had...
