Climbing toward the sun

A sunrise hike in the Austrian Alps

Climbing toward the sun

When my alarm went off at 4.00 am after 1 hour of sleep I hazily began to question the decision to do a hike in order to see the sunrise over St.Anton. When we arrived in St.Christoph to begin the hike I was still wishing to be back in bed, but as we climbed further into the Austrian Alps the views far outweighed my now diminishing need for sleep.

The time was 5. 34 when I took the first photo, looking back toward St.Christoph as it glowed below. Heading east the sky was turning a lighter blue, as the sun pushed back the blackness like torch in the shadows. It wasn’t long until we reached the Galzig lift station and broke out the hot chocolate (nice one Gaz). By this point the time was  6.00 am and the sunrise was in full view. And what a view it was. The lights of St.Anton slowly flickering out as the daylight covered the town, the clouds creating a reflective surface for the red and orange hues of the approaching light to bounce off, and the vapour trails of the planes streaking across the sky many miles above.

It was truly a sight to behold, and one I hope to see again before this season comes to an end. But until then, at least I have some photo’s to look at.
